Poplar Trees Reduced in Marple: By Chris Whyatt – Tree Surgeon

Stockport Tree Services were asked to reduce a pair of very tall poplar trees in Marple near Stockport. The Trees had grown very tall and were towering over local houses and other buildings. The Poplar trees had rather thin trunks, and their height, coupled with the shallow ground where they were rooted put them at risk of falling in strong winds. Falling trees can cause devastating damage to their surroundings, and the owners of such trees are legally responsible for any damage caused by storm-damaged trees.
In addition, these trees were blocking a lot of light out from surrounding houses.
Chris and the team are used to working at heights are fully insured, trained and qualified to do so. Here’s a photo of Chris at the top of the Poplar tree, as he begins the reduction.

The Benefits of Pruning Trees
Rather than completely remove these trees, which was an option. However, we decided to simply reduce their height. This pruning would allow the trees a few more years of growth before they required any further attention from a tree surgeon.
If you regularly manage the trees on your property, you can significantly reduce the need of having to fell them completely.
Pruning Trees Makes The Tree Healthier
By pruning trees you will inevitably cut back any dead and infected branches, leaving only healthy growth. In addition, you will be removing/reducing any pests and fungi that might be affecting the health of the trees.
It Can Suppress Or Encourage Growth
Trees are pruned for a good reason, but pruning can also have positive side effects. For example, we may want to suppress the growth of the tree. Slowing its growth down for a period, as some trees can become unruly growing at terrific rates.
Alternatively, you may want to prune trees in such a way that promotes new growth by pruning more sparsely. This is often done when people want to use the new growth as an increased privacy screen.
Pruning Creates a Safer Environment
Trees are large plants, but left unchecked they can become dangerous. Pruning can keep low-hanging or damaged branches from becoming too large and hazardous. On smaller trees and hedges, it can keep the foliage from blocking the pavement or growing in a way that rubs and damages property.
Never tackle large scale pruning on your own. The chances are you’ll damage, or possibly even kill the tree. The best solution is to have a professional come out and prune your trees.
Pruning Lets in Light
As you’ve seen in this article, by pruning trees we allow more light to penetrate to ground level. This can mean an improved home environment for people living nearby, letting in more light to gardens, encouraging smaller plants and lawns to grow more healthily. The improvement in light and air circulation will also lead to a reduction in the growth of mosses and lichens in lawns, walls and tree trunks.
